Spikey Pom-pom balls (make 2)
Holding the dark brown embroidery floss and beige yarn together, wrap yarn and floss loosely
around your index and middle fingers 50-70 times, depending on how full you want Sammy’s
spikes to be. Cut off yarn and floss ends.
Slip a 6” to 8” length of dark brown embroidery floss all the way around the wrapped yarn
and floss, like a belt. Tie a knot with the embroidery floss, and slip the yarn and floss bundle
off of your fingers while pulling the knot tight, cinching the “waist” of the bundle. Continue
to pull tightly as you complete the double knot.
While firmly holding the ends to the knot you just tied, use scissors to cut through all of the
loops on the pom-pom. You will now have a loose, shapeless yarn and floss ball. Continue to
use the scissors to snip off bits of yarn and floss to trim and shape the pom-pom until you’re
satisfied. I cut the pom-pom balls slightly unevenly, to give Sammy a spikier look.
Finishing
Position the pom-pom balls toward the back of Sammy’s body (the round end), leaving about
1.5 to 2 cm near the pointed end for his face. Thread a needle through the ends of the
embroidery floss knot, and attach the pom-poms to the body.
Position the ears in front of the pom-pom balls, and attach them in the 1:00 and 11:00
positions. Weave in all ends.
Sew a 6 mm round black bead to the pointed tip of the body. The starting and ending knots
should come from behind the ears so that the bead is deeply embedded into the crochet
body. Position and attach the two E beads for eyes.
